Enter the "digital dark age(s)", that many pigeons have been fearing...
"When a company like Google puts its name behind any effort to promote OpenDocument Format it's a sign that it is not just a technology on the move, but one that is arriving very rapidly,"...

It's not arriving very rapidly Will; it's already HERE.

"If Google includes ODF support in Google Spreadsheets and finds a role for ODF in Gmail then you're talking about a significant number of users who will be using and creating documents in that format," he said.

This looks more to me like a promotional for Googles' web apps than a story to support the adoption of ODF....if Google keeps on the path they are; I would think maybe they mean to encourage a shutout of anything that resembles any association whatsoever, with the MS "empire".

And somehow I don't think "groups", ancient wore out user-tracking (email) services, mickey mouse instant messaging service, and the same old boring portal with a fancy name that sounds like a bathroom cleaner are gonna have any realistic chance of doing anything about it; either.
