Can't disagree with you there...
...though Gore does know about Java (the technology), believe it or not happy, though I doubt he knows much about it, except that it's owned by Sun.

I think the question that most needs to be put to politicians is "Does our economy need an IT industry or not?" There are certain industries that are considered critical to our economic health, such as the airline business (I'm referring to companies like Boeing). The government has a tendency to provide some protection for such industries because we can't afford to lose them. I would hope that our politicians at least consider whether an IT industry is a critical need in the U.S., and if so, take a serious look at whether it is in need of some protection to keep critical parts of it here.

It seems that in Silicon Valley, the attitude is that offshoring work in the short run is a good long-term strategy for future technological growth here. Marc Andreeson of Opsware has been one of the more outspoken proponents of this idea. In an interview on Lou Dobbs he said that outsourcing now will lead to more American jobs down the road (presumably in technology), and that that won't be possible, or at least diminished, if outsourcing is stymied. I take him at his word for that.
