If you're finding you'll have to replace your PCs and apps anyway...
...might be a good time to try out the alternatives (Linux, BSD, etc.). 98 and XP are different enough that you'd probably have to do some retraining and application replacement in order to make the switch. Why not consider a distro that will still work well enough on those older machines? You can play all you want and not have to pay licensing fees.

You'll end up with a far more stable and secure system (over Win98), and be able to put off buying new PCs for at least a little while longer.
