Was this just an opportunity...
An opportunity for ZDNet to help M$ prop up the stock? They spent as much time hyping Vista and Office as on the new CRM Live. Maybe this is M$' version of "Customer Relationship Management". As for "air cover"...any decent business will use what suits its needs, not what some employee clamors for. And while I'm not dumb enough to say that Linux is going to take the desktop by storm in the next year...I think it is also mistaken for Stevie to assume that the home consumer is always going to be pro-Windows, as his "air cover" assumption would indicate. Price point is an increasingly important issue to consumers. At some point, people are going to say "is there something else that still lets me do all the things I want to do but doesn't cost $200 or more"? And it may not be Linux...it may be OSX...it may be something under development but not yet known...who knows? James Cramer emphasizes this point in his "Real Money" book: don't tell me where a stock has been - tell me where it's gonna go. I don't care what the Windows past has been...what is the outlook for the future? Why does Steve have to promise us that there will never again be such a gap between releases? Can he keep that promise? More questions than answers. When you look at all these things from a higher level, you get the picture of a company treading water until they can get something, anything, out the door. And pushing some "Live services" out is alot quicker than getting Windows or Office done...because Live is just web apps. Which is because they are simpler...but that also means they are easier for a competitor to produce and compete with.

The verdict: sell! Booo-yaaah, Steve! Booo-yahh!

Do NOT use this, it will be hosted on a bloated, insecure, bug ridden OS.  DonnieBoy | 07/11/06
