The problems with backing up the desktop (IMHO) are manyfold. Here are two from the top of my list:

1) You are depending on the user to leave the computer on, or a 'wake on lan' feature to operate properly. Neither are acceptable to me.

2) Your backup window shrinks, as the amount of time required to initiate the connection to the client is multiplied by the number of clients. When your window is tight, this trumps any other concerns you may have.


I can't speak for other shops, and wouldn't presume to know what's best for them - but I would not recommend the strategy you've outlined for my shop, or any other place I've worked at. As always, your mileage may vary.
