Here is exactly what a lot of people don't understand:
The simple beauty of the MS OS is the basic idea of everyone having the same layout. Essentially, the systems are layed out the same. Software, especially office software, is generally laid out the same.

With linux, we will see divergence in every imaginable way. The individual programs will all be different from each other as there are few, if any, standards for "look and feel" or functionality, and now on top of that the GUI's are beginning to diverge.

How would you like to be the guy on the help desk, and the first question you ask the poor sap on the other end is:"so, what kernel are you running today?" followed by "can you find the icon...O, you can't 'cause you're running the other GUI. O well, this is going to be one of those looong calls."

The Linux community should concentrate on working more cooperatively, rather than reinvent things time and time again in parallel. After just a few iterations of parallel development, I am sure you can get the idea of just of diverse the pool will become. While this may be a "good point" for Linux to some artsy folks out there, for the business world this will create a level of stagnation that will eventually lead to the demise of Linux.

And if you think the idea of single GUI/system is bad (i.e. MS) here's a another take on this: Look at the apple. Here, even the HARDWARE is limited - never mind the OS and software. Ask anyone that has one of those shiny boxes; They LOVE them...?!
