The FUD has been turned off
Even if Microsoft management intends to do wrong with this anouncement there is something good about it. It means thousands of shops with OpenOffice projects underway do not need to arm themselfs for battle with decison makers who are or were influence peddled by the monopolist. It means developers who where only half in with openoffice can now devote efforts full time to ODF because they know their efforts will be used even should their companies or governement agencies obtain free Microsoft Office donations from the Gates Foundation. Lets recognize that tax payers and share holders have a hard time with payment for something that is basically unnecessary like Office 7. It would take action like dropping support on older versions of Office to sell that purchase.

The Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) about open source has been turned of for now. Microsoft management must know they can not win a battle on price performance and power consumption with current offerings from the monopoly. This is because the Intel and AMD chips in the 2007 model computers address the three Ps and security by implementing proven mainframe technology. This multicore technology requires software to be threaded, meaning that Java now rules.

If management is smart they will get on a JVM for Vista proto. The Linux threat is lessoned but not eliminated with this anouncement. The hearts and minds of the Java developers are turning to Linux because so many of the development tools operate better there.
