Problem is foundational
First, MS has not been delivering on any promises. Why expect SP2 to change that. Second, the real problem lies in Microsofts attitude and the delivery of a dangerous product. XP is problem some at its very core and with a troubled foundation, anything but a new foundation will simply be shaky as well. This issue goes much deeper than simply today's security. It's about a dangerous way of doing business with a lack of concern for the consumer. MS current attemp is still self serving and an attempt to save their market share. This type of motivation can only spell more chaos. I trully believe that XP is unpatchable and will have to be fixed by a totally new approach to the kernel. The kernel has become simply too big for even its creator to deal with. I doubt I have seen any products, IT or otherwise, that needed so many fixes to be safely used. There have been so many fixes and now a complete service pack. But the idea of a problem in XP's foundation has never been addressed. And one last point, go to MS web site and read the knowledge base documents on problems adressed by SP1 and then read the documents on the problems created by SP1. The lists are about the same size. XP in its current state is simply unrepairable. There is no reason to expect different results with SP2.
