If "free" Linux were simply to use, and there were free apps for everything (beyond office automation), then Linux would have killed Windows years ago.

Has little to with these existing and being simple to use. It has everything to do with the salesman that sell a computer illeterate use a PC and a software package for $500 that contains everything from encyclopedias to adobe software and office software. Now they have spend $500 and find Linux which they may or may not like. If they do like it they aren't going to dump Windows and thier $500 investment in software to run Linux and for free.

It's the exact same reason the people don't switch to the MAC. The hardware is as any non bargain PC and it's even simpler to use with software that cost less than MS software. But people don't switch because they have an investment in software on the PC.
