What about the applications that you put on a mcahine.

Unless EVERY piece of software you own is free open source, pirated or something else, the cost of the OS is nothing. My Windows games cost a LOT more than the OS.

Of all the software on most people's systems, the OS is usually a very tiny piece of the cost.

So for the average consumer (it can be different in a business environment), saving $50 on the OS may be great, but when you want to actually do something productive and useful, finding straight foward free stuff for everything is simply not possible in Linux, without a LOT of learning.

If "free" Linux were simply to use, and there were free apps for everything (beyond office automation), then Linux would have killed Windows years ago. But that simply isn't the case and Windows still enjoys a level of support on the consumer desktop that Linux on the desktop will not see for a long time if ever.
