As far as I know Mr Ou used single processor machines for his tests, so any java advantages wouldn't be visible.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge most of OpenOffice.org is written in C++, so it wouldn't matter much if java was faster on this particular platform.

I suspect that the main difference in speed is that OpenOffice.org uses real XML, while the Microsoft format is some kind of semi XML with binary blobs embedded between xml tags.

This makes MS-Office faster, but it also disqualifies it as a long term storage format as the binary blobs may be hard to handle on future platforms or other OSes. This is why governments and others that need to store information for decades or even centuries have expressed so much interest in OpenOffice.org and the new ODF standard.

Speed isn't everything.
