product performance
Product performance in the latest setback for the world's largest software maker according to Microsoft Corp.

Performance usually means speed and you get that from CPU speed or from coding.

The assumption is that Microsoft will have to join the rest of the world in seeking speed from code rather than by bullying hardware manufacturers for more powerful processors.

I love the bit about bloat btw.

If you look at the Java world you have the appearance of huge bloat. The comment about bloat is potentially relevant on a single CPU.

But this single CPU notion has not been the world in Internet style computing for some time (the network is the computer) and it will not be the world of personal computing in 2007 off net either.

By the end of this year you likely will be able to purchase a personal computer with 16 or 32 CPUs. All the cell phone devices will have at least 2.

So only Microsoft will be running both the Operating System and the Office software on a single CPU unless the performance issue is addressed by using the help they have been offered by fellows from Intel and really IT professionals everywhere, such as myself, who just want our shops to nevermore be battle grounds. Competitive cooperation will be the norm.

Think of one CPU for OS, one CPU for Word Processor, one CPU for spread sheet, one for browser. If the user has no need for spread sheet then that CPU can be used for the JVM. The bloat is under control is my point.

It requires code reorganization to get the performance of last year's hardware on next years personal computing devices because next years models rely on threaded code rather than CPU speed.

Performance problems are problems only for Microsoft, however. Everyone else has been on board for sometime with the concept. As I mentioned this is proven-multiple-decade long technology on mainframes. Any software architect - including Bill Gates - has to have noticed. Java servlets found the path of least resistance on mainframes because those computers are multicore where as small appliance devices (the intended target platform) did not because they were singletons.

It really has taken illegal use of monopoly power to prevent hardware manufacturers from implementing multicore on PCs 5 or 10 years ago. Java was built for this hardware vision 10 years ago and Microsoft's wind-sucking-out of Netscape was determined by Jackson to be specifically owing to Netscape's potential to distribute Java applications which exploit that vision.

Microsoft is to valuable to the US to be allowed to fail. To succeed all that is really needed is following proven mainframe techology. The risk is little in following; there is no upside to ignoring that. There will only be EU and US sanctions owing to continued consumer harm.
