AOL subscribers, sales keep sliding

A O H E L L: If I had not been refered to their "Host / Moderator" program, I would not even still be on AOHELL because they just keep raising the price of BYOA!! ($4.95 ==> $9.95 ==> $13.95 ==> ??.95)

Also as a former user of AOL DSL, I can tell you that it sucks big time!! You HAD to sign-in to AOHELL to get DSL access to THE NET; I think it goes thru their systems to-boot cause many a time things slowed down to a crawl or stopped completely. They dO not offer a separate PPPoE 'dialer' to use so if you did not sign-in, you could not use the DSL.

Anyhow, I just recently jumped-ship from COVAD DSL to Charter Communications Cable cause I could get 2M service for the same price as the 384K DSL; plus changes to Covad's POP3 servers (they claimed were to prevent spammers from using them) meant that I could no-longer just send e-mail! I had to first CHECK IT before outgoing mail would go thru!!

As for the AOHELL BLOATWARE, the latest versions have everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink in them! PLus, they have refused to support MAC OS 9 (& OS 8) for ages, so all their users who have no desire to "downgrade" to OS-X (or can't afford a shiny new overpiced system with it installed) are stuck using AOL 5 for all eternity.

Much as I despise MICROSOFT, I would have to agree that MSN is much better than AOHELL these daze and most likely where a lot of newbies & neophytes are going to.

Of course if all you want is CHEAP narrowband service without all the "content" fluff, then UNITED ONLINE (merger of Juno & Netzero) is the way to go for only $9.95 (or $14.95 for Shotgun/Speedband) a month.; Posted by: dr_who@...
