Unfounded concern?
I have no trouble exchanging files with anyone using Office 97,2000,XP, or 2003 (which is really the only app that this is of concern...)

Sure, I can save in new formats that perhaps the older software can't read, but it's also backward compatible.. I can save an Access 2003 database so that Access 97 can work with it..

I don't see any practical reason why you "must" upgrade to the latest and greatest if you don't need the functionality provided. (Of course, if upper management or clients - unjustifiably - demand that you use the latest & greatest.. then you're stuck.. but that's another issue.. )
