MS feels the same as many software co.'s
Microsoft is not the only software maker who has done this, nor were they the first to implement it...Most all software companies collect most all your information upon registration, such as most all Adobe products (not counting Reader) record your IP address every time there is an update available. Our company has a very expensive multi-user licensing, but is tied through our work domain. I was given a copy from our IT department to take home to do work, when I attempted to register it, an error came back that it was NOT able to register an invalid copy, only because of the IP address. The same with AutoCAD, Cakewalk, Peachtree and several others.

But I agree the validation should be at the companies servers and not installed locally on your PC/Laptop.

Get this...I built my parents a very nice computer to replace a piece of junk they had, I had a copy of XP Pro on my Sony Vaio Laptop. Being in a hurry to make the 5 hour trip, I grabbed the copy of XP Pro and bought a new version of XP Pro upon my arrival back home. When I turned the Laptop on, I had a message that the XP Pro was not a Genuine Copy and ways to purchase another license and or a new copy of XP so I shut it down to prepare to do a clean install of the new XP I bought, but needed to save some files and data before I started.

When I rebooted the Vaio, it automatically begin to reload the pre-install from the pre-install partition (Which I should have deleted). I phoned MS to complain and was told that Sony has done this with their newer Desktops, Laptops, and Notebooks, so I telephoned Sony and they said MS was correct. Imagine has ticked off I was, between this (the Vaio) and Sony's BMG Rootkit, I will never buy another Sony product.
