How many times does it take to determine
Don:

You state: "It simply checks to see if your copy is legal."

So how many times does it take to determine if you own a legal copy? One, two, three, ....

Not only do you have to submit your software code now to activate your copy of XP, but now the software calls home to verify your software x number of times and without consent. The difference is when an update is obtained the company's server will request the updates. This is opposed to a software package within a company server calling outside the organization's network without consent. This is a violation of use of the organization network resources for which they pay for in real dollars. So who is pirating who here? Is not pirating taking resources to use for your own gain? Sounds like Microsoft is practing some piraticy with WGA.
