Why do you seem so acidic towards the individuals that do not like Microsoft's business model? I would agree with the posters that do not like Microsoft's business practices, and I think "sleazy" may be kind to the company. However, neither individual you responded to said that Microsoft should not be able to validate their software, but complained their methods of validation delivery should have been done differently.
I do believe that Microsoft creates lots of piracy because of their (in my opinion) expensive prices for their software. What would a pirate have to gain if all Microsoft software were free? I would say they would have no reason to pirate software if there is no money in it. And, similarly if the price of Microsoft software were priced lower, the pirates would have to sell their software at a lower price. The lower prices would make the task of pirating software a much less lucrative business.
Lower prices would mean less revenue for Microsoft. One solution might be to offer their software in a value and premium package. Value software would be inexpensive - no free support, and it is installable in only one PC (no taking your copy to another PC even if you are building it yourself) I would pay $25 or $30 for a one PC installable version of WinXP. Premium software would be more expensive, but would include free support, free upgrades, and could be used on more than one PC (upgraded equipment or total replacement of a damaged machine).
Don, I know these are simple ideas and aren't perfect, but they are an alternative. And please, if you want to respond to my post know that you are wasting your breath. You can be rude about my comments, but I will ignore them because you haven't offered any solutions - just spiteful comments. - Posted by: geoff.stephens@...
