- Can Microsoft learn from its own history?
-
One of the many fundamental security problems with the whole windows architecture was (and is)it's pervasive interconnectedness. Now they apparently want the Longhorn OS to allow anything running on the machine access to my address book and calendar, and to be able to notify others of "my status". Any security guy will tell you that controlled compartmentalization is an essential part of of a secure infrastructure, so has Microsoft failed to learn from its own history?
It seems to me that with the OS-integrated presence management "features" mentioned in this article that Microsoft is moving more toward a design philosophy where they view the user as a resource to be used by the machine rather than viewing the machine being a resource to be used by the user.
I'm reminded of a really old Star Trek episode in which Mr. Spock observes "Computers make excellent servants.... but I have no desire to serve under them." - Posted by: Debunker Posted on: 03/18/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
