Yes, there is confusion in the name "open source".
Yes, you can download the source, but it is still proprietary. Just because you can see the source code does not make it open source.

And, I agree fully that Sun should not be forced to open source Java. I am arguing it would be in their best interest. I love this company, but wish they would really embrace open source.

Finally, we love MAC users, they are running an open source kernel (darwin) that is mostly compatible with Linux. That is why OSX has so many wonderful open source apps like Samba available.
