Call Me Ignorant, But...
I don't usually reply, but I have to ask this one. Isn't Java already open source?

At my company, we had some issues with a way Java was handling various network connections and we cracked open the source code and found the problem.

Isn't this a definition of open source?

And I have another question, why should any one company be forced to turn over their product to any other organization?

What is the big deal?

Most of Java is just a specification, there are already numerous VMs out there and if someone wanted to write their own, they could.

It would seem to me that any one who wants to force an organization to turn their product, in which they paid for the R&D to design and implement has another agenda.

That to me seems wrong.

That would be like me walking up to Square and demanding of them to give me the code to Final Fantasy.

And before the ignorant flame war starts I am Mac/Linux and Windows user and I prefer the Mac.

I just need a little insight and knowledge of why a company should be required to give away what they developed. And that seems to be what many Open Source advocates and IBM (I think they just want to push expensive hardware and services) want for their own gain.

Someone teach me.
