And today's correction of a ZDNet story is....
Thus quoth Becker:

"The company's programs are based on WINE (Windows Emulator)..."

Well actually (says he, hitching up his smarty-pants) "WINE" stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator"... And it isn't: it's a complete porting of the Windows DLLs to run on Linux, re-engineerring the intervening layers of software, so that the top level application is unaware that it is not running on the operating system it was designed for.

The net result (and the the important point to note, in all this) is that applications running on Wine frequently run faster and more stably on Wine/Linux than they do in their native Windows environment.

Wine is far more than an emulator, but "Wifmtae" is hard to pronounce.
