Novell did NOT tranfer Unix copyrights to (old) SCO ...
thats why (new) SCO had to apply for their own Unix copyrights. (Old) SCO knew what they bought from Novell, but (new) SCO did not realize that key IP was still in the hands of Novell. Thats why (new) SCO paid $35 million for a product that Novell paid $800 million for. The difference was the value of IP retained by Novell and the depriciation of the Unix product sans that IP. (New) SCO investors are learning a hard lesson about IP law. One can buy perpetual rights to produce and distribute a product without buying all of the underlying IP. The irony is that SCO has been trying to sue IBM on that very basis, but Novell appears to have beaten them at their own game. Unix is like an old car. Various contributors have customized it with third party add ons, and various owners have stripped parts off of it at their convenience. SCO is trying their best to make their old junker into a luxury classic, but reality is not cooperating.
