VB 6 run time.. where that? How about releasing protocol specs instead
Integration is King.. So you want to share.. share where it counts and can add innovation to Microsoft products.

1) Release the VB 6 runtime source... Let the world support it. M$ doesn't want to, and several Linux folks would have it ported in weeks.

2) Release CDO and CDOEXM source for Exchange and Outlook integration. Let everyone's mail clients work natively with Exchange. Open MAPI wide! Let someone build the secure Outlook replacement and push you to work harder instead of linger behind protecting their cash cows. If you are really that good.. PROVE IT. I think they could.

3) Release specs for things they call standard but are not: like their Kerberos "additions" so everyone else can play 100% with AD environment. Make standards based encryption available instead of only propreitary methods for LDAP/AD functions. Let the Samba 4 team see the goods and see if they can make us a better, completely standards based DC. Doubt they can, but lets find out. If Redmond is secure in its code.. what do they have to loose by being standards... COMPLETELY standards?

4) Shock the world.. release IE6 source two week after IE7 on Vista is GA. Watch the world upgrade before the crap storm of security issues hits the street.

5) Release the kernel to Win95 right now. In 3 years more, release the NT4 kernel code. In 5 years more, release the Win2000 kernel code. In 10 years release the XP kernel code.

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. NOT WHILE WE HAVE GRID LOCK IN WASHINGTON, UK, AND CHINA OUT OF MICROSOFT ON KEY ISSUES. WHY IS DCOM STILL KING IN WINDOWS? BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET OUT OF THEIR OWN WAY. WHY WOULD THEY INVITE THE WORLD TO PUSH ON THEM. REALLY IMPRESSED WITH .Net Forms.. NOT REALLY.

Love and Hate em' Hope Microsoft is WILDLY successful for many years to come. Keeps us all in $$$$.
