patching is required? Says who?
Try a couple of firewalls, hardware and software (to let you know what is talking to the network from your machine), up-tp-date antivirus software, a web browser other than IE, a mail program other than Outlook Express, and careful handling of attachments, and you don't have to worry about patching.

How do viruses and worms get into your machine? Open ports (you DO know what they are), IE, OE and its big brother, and double clicking on the wrong attachments. You will be safer and more stable with your Windows machine if you lay off of MS applications and don't depend on MS to protect you. You also won't be subject to the updated conditions of usage for that junk you don't need.

If you think I am wrong, then tell me how I am at risk given the precautions taken above. In my world constant patching is a risk to stability.
