On the surface, it sounds GREAT.
What happens once the money is doled out is another.

Gates' words are noble. But actions mean more. Especially to those who have the money and status.

I wonder how many Microsoft programmers who lost their jobs via offshoring will feel. Are they getting any scholarships for schooling by Gates? How about the companies Microsoft exterminated via its business practices? I could go on for ages, but I'll miss my point. At what point does a person suddenly drop the predatory behavior and turn into a Mother Teresa wannabe?

Yes, America needs to improve its own while improving the world... and since corporations are the ones in power, the math is pretty simple. Corporations need to show America that it has got a future. Right now, we're only seeing countries, some of which hate our guts AND our freedoms, get a windfall if not a free ride. And you bet they'll take it. Then turn it against us. It's a historical reality. And since we're repeating it, we've obviously learned very little.

Again, time will tell. It always does. And I hope my cynicism is wrong. But Microsoft's history is anything but benevolent, why should they change now? What Gates does always helps Gates in some way, first and foremost. He's a businessman. Always has been. He's there for the profit. Not the product. At his current age, I don't think much has changed. Especially as he's quite successful, I can't deny him that. Though I sometimes wonder how he can sleep at night... But I digress. So when Gates does something, it is very fair to ask "What's in it for him?" Because that's how it always seems to end up. His profits. His image. Him. Most corporate CEOs would be no different. Indeed, with all the offshoring going on, it only makes good fiscal sense to eradicate the maladies in the countries that have the highest number of people... who'll make good second class worker units. Don't want to train them just to die from some disease, regardless of how quick it kills. The TCO and ROI must be maintained.
