There are always trends and fads that would be a waste of time to pursue. Web 2.0, as hyped, for instance.
But there are also major changes in customer expectations or the software industry that have to be recognized and responded to with all available resources. The internet or security, for instance.

Bill Gates made the correct decisions on the main issues. He also made some bad calls, but those proved more minor.

The comment in the article praising attention to what's going compared to being concerned about maintaining revenues is an example of the sort of nonsense Microsoft has escaped.

For Microsoft's sake, anyone succeeding to Bill Gates in making those decisions should have the same ability to look out for the company.
