What collapse?
Alexander had more or less a single campaign and was never unsuccessful.
The troops did feel after a while that they were too far from home. Alexander had killed individuals who wanted to restrain him, and, though there's no proof, it's suspicious that what happened after he turned back cost lives.
But turning back voluntarily does not count as a collapse.

After Alexander died the lands were divided among the principal generals. Ptolemy obtained Egypt, for example. These kingdoms continued for centuries.

I suppose this could be considered a failure because of the sacrifice of future prospects if unity had been maintained. Sort of like what would have happened to Microsoft if the company had been broken up by Judge Jackson.
