Uses of stored procedures

They have a role in data security - along with views, triggers, etc. If you don't let network clients change data other than by performing a stored procedure, you can bar illegitimate operations.

They also allow server-side changes to an application without requiring the client be updated.

For sure, good applications nowadays run as middleware, so the client isn't in direct contact with the server at all. And a smart data engine recognises repeated queries anyway, so that bonus of stored procedures is devalued.

But if every vendor offers stored procedures, there doesn't need to be lock-in. And they do allow developers like me to learn SQL and learn it well, and skip other languages!
