You are right about the speed and the market scope. You're not going to replace your Datastage implementation with mySQL. On the other hand, I know of a lot of developers and database admins who install instances of SQLServer to handle simple tasks like logging. Do this enough and you start investing lots of money on databases that is essentially a multiple user Access equivalent. If your competitor uses mySQL or other free databases for this work then your competitor needs less total dollar revenue to eclipse your profits. That means they can sell their product or services cheaper and still generate more revenue.
