Static thinking
Mike,

That's some static old-school thinking. You're just the type of person who is losing his job to India. $2 million? That $2 million could fun about 30 developers in India, who are very used to using open source projects. I hope for the US's sake that no one in your company comes up with this. Outsource the database, save the $2 million and get rid of 1990's thinkers like Mike Cox. Heck, if you make any salary at all they could turn your position into 5 positions overseas.

Remember CEOs are looking at total cost. They don't give a rat's behind if you use open source or not. If you are too expensive then your job is going to China. Open source is one of the only ways which we can compete. Think of this. SQLServer costs about as much as 1/3 a developer's salary in China for an entire year (for one instance). If they needed an 8-way box processing lots of data, they could get SQLServer or 8 employees and mySQL. If mySQL does 90% of the job then SQLServer doesn't have a chance. Now or what you've just spent on SQLServer, the Chinese company will offer your boss an 8-way processor box and 8 employees doing custom value-added work. Suddenly Miek Cox doesn't seem to be that employable after all.

Mike, I'd get your resume ready.
