They aren't. I didn't say they were, nor did Hakon.

There never was, nor is there now, 'font hell' or 'web font chaos'.
Changing the font from say Palatino to Times New Roman or
Helvetica to Univers or Ariel makes zero practical difference to
nearly any web page. Maybe you prefer one font to another, so
change our browser font settings or use a custom style sheet -
problem fixed. All the ones I use allow you to override any font
setting in the page.

The article is trying to highlight the distinct lack of imagination
among web page authors when using fonts, the "Microsoft
monopoly" tag was just to get you to read it.
