Ok...
Microsoft tells the W3C that they are giving these fonts to everyone. The W3C says great and they become part of the standard. Since 90% of the PCs that use the internet are Windows based and these fonts are already there, it is logical to use them. LAMP, or any other webserver, has nothing to do with the fonts that a webpage uses. That is really up to the designer. However, most designers just use the "core web fonts." But what about those that want more?

The problem this person is addressing is that since Microsoft closed the "core web fonts" program and it is illegal to try and change them, there is no good way for web designers to add fonts. That is what he is advocating.

For instance, we have a specific font we use for our logo. In order to put it on a web page, we have to create a graphic. It would be nice if there was a way we could use that font in typeface so that we did not have to "work magic" to get the logo into a paragraph of text.
