...how is this a problem with Microsoft? It seems to me that what Microsoft has done here is exactly what people have been clamoring for it to do with its IP - release it free and clear to the world. In doing so, it became a 'de facto' standard. Now all of a sudden that's a bad thing. What should Microsoft have done? Restrict the use of the fonts, or charge for them? Then everyone would have complained that Microsoft was keeping the fonts 'proprietary'.

You can't have it both ways. Either Microsoft opens up its IP and possibly 'corners the market', or it doesn't and restricts progress.

Besides, since the fonts don't cost anything, what's the big deal? Who is losing money because of this? Isn't that the Linux creed?
