Totally missed the point.
As is often the case with posters on ZDNet, your religious zeal causes you to completely miss the point. As the article stated, CSS 2 already specifies how to download and use fonts specific to a page. Fonts already have suitable copyright control built in, so there is nothing stopping deezyners using whatever font they want in a CSS2 capable browser right now.

The issue with Microsoft?s "font monopoly" is that nearly all web page authors just accept the defaults we?ve had for a decade and haven?t bothered to move on. Imagine if all printed material only ever used the standard 36 Postscript fonts that come with every Postscript printer. How come graphics pros in the print industry have worked out fonts (they did so over a hundred years ago) but the up-and-coming techno-savvy youngsters haven?t worked out fonts on the web yet? Even though the tools to do so have been around since 1998 when CSS 2 became a W3C recommendation?

That is the issue.
