Well... you're not going to get "really free" for anything, but it's getting close.
I've just been investigating various offers and features of VoIP deals from available vendors. One of the items in the Vonage package is very clearly an option to transfer either a regular phone number OR a cellphone number to be your primary VoIP number. There is also clear notice that it can take weeks for your telco to do the paperwork for this, and your cellphone provider may well take much longer, but the option is there.
It also is clear that the feature set for Vonage is FAR richer than 'regular' telco blather (and no monthly extra 'fees' for it), that the startup costs are offset in a month by savings, and that the days of charges by the boatload from the old guard are going away (note that this article is about AT&T moving away from the old business model, although obviously grudgingly and only partially -- more cost, less features, flexibility nil).
This means I can order up a Vonage #, then forward it to my cellphone, and get national coverage regardless of which number folks use to call me. Not bad for $15/month (to Vonage) for basic service levels.
