We are already where Microsoft wants us to go. Of course that is the case if you are using Eclipse basd tools such as Websphere.
Zdnet recently described technology from SAP. This technology, called Web Services, has been confusing to Microsoft loyals because the same term is used inapropriately by .Net developers. As I understand things it isn't a Web Service unless you can issue a command that causes the service to describe what methods the service provides.
Case in point, the Web Service from SAP will allow you to feed the SAP Human Resource module leave and hour worked data. Hence folks like the Washington State Patrol build time system Intranets with servelets or applets that fully replace Ajax and DHTML in a manner more rich feelly than possible otherwise. Couple this with threading on multicore business computers and you see there is little reason to follow the Microsoft path. Java and threading on multicore is the future. Period.
SAP was founded by Germans who Worked at IBM and IBM's next flavor of websphear provides hooks for SAP Web Services in the form of wizards. Oracle and everyone else is doing the same kind of thing. When a tool can cause the API of an existing web service to self document all that is needed for the coder is a location.
I advise third parties to ensure they are being paid (by Microsoft) before going "Live". The potential for bleeding is great.
