Their focus is still maintaining the monopoly
Security might bite them in the end, but Linux / OpenOffice are about to get a critical mass at which point Microsoft will have to drastically reduce prices. So, they are throwing huge resources into adding anything and everything to Windows and Office (of course free or almost free), in the hopes that you will use it and lock youself in to the platform. This is a direct trade-off for security. Adding to the code base at a time when they have so many problems with security just can NOT be justified. Add to this that these features are welded either to the operating system or the office suite, and you have a disaster in the making. Right now, Microsof is having to fight the war on a lot of different fronts. They are between a rock and a hard place with security. It will be fun to watch Balmer and Gates squirm.
