MSFT unlikely to compete on value basis
I honestly don't believe MSFT is going to be able to compete on a value basis with online services. They stopped being competitive years ago and have been coasting along on the cash from their OEM positioning. They're late to the party, as usual, and are showing up with a half-baked product mix. Throw it up on the wall and hope something sticks.

It's funny but the Netscape mentality still seems pervasive in Redmond. MSFT edged out Netscape by abusing their monopoly position in the market and for some strange reason there's still an ingrained belief that they can do that again in other areas. Like security services. Selling customers protection from their very own crapass software. What cajones. I mean large caliber brass ones. Just an example of how MSFT is almost desperate for new sources of revenue.

But I don't think it's going to work anymore. When the OS and OS protection are coming from the same company it brings the question of why they don't fix their crappy software into sharper relief. A lot of business customers feel like that should be included in the price of the OS.

People who know computers are exploring alternatives, another trend that doesn't exactly paint a happy future for Castle Redmondore.

Individually those trends might not mean much, but collectively it points to MSFT becoming more marginalized in mainstream computing. I think we'll look back at these days and marvel at the dark days.
