Encryption is the problem
If the port is open to allow access through the firewall that is where the security concern. All encrypting it does is make it so the packets can't be sniffed. That's something you'd want to do with any data that you want to protect from email to http trafic or what ever.

I think the question here is how secure is that hole in the firewall that allows the communications to occurr.
