Why not?

heavy-duty users rely on them?"

Because heavy duty users wouldn't touch SQL Server with a ten
foot pole. It's as unstable and insecure as all their other junk, it
only runs on Windows, and then you need Windows workstations
for the admin tools... Microsoft is never going to get into the
data center until they start making their products stable, secure,
compatible with the rest of the world, and less kludgy to use.
