Who needs it?
Just use one of the other (non-Intel) 802.11a/b/g chipsets that are FULLY open source. You're guaranteed functionality and continued support.

What happens when Intel gets tired of supporting a release -- or if they decide to reverse their decision to support Linux? With a half open source implementation, you might as well be running a propritary OS, like Windows.

It's not like they don't have competition, so who needs it. If they want the business, they'll do business the way their customers want it.
