There's a really simple solution to that
Those geeks are disgruntled because they are not getting any returns out of those corps. Those corps need to pay some of those geeks to keep up what they are doing. If they love doing it for free, odds are they'll love it more doing it for a paycheck. And when other geeks see those geeks working for the corps pumping out great code, then they'll at least appreciate the community support the corps are providing and think better of them.

And what's more, those geeks getting a paycheck will get something proprietary programmers for hire will never get: the right to keep, alter, and redistrubute the code they made for themselves.
