Yes, better to have a competitor you can see...
...than wait for one to arise from many disjointed efforts. Now there's something to which Microsoft can compare its products.

And if you were Microsoft, wouldn't Red Hat be the sort of competitor you want?

Every bad report from Novell brings Red Hat closer to being the monopoly supplier of commercial grade Linux, which is the only kind Microsoft has to care about.

Red Hat is comparatively small, and the open source arrangements Red Hat has made act as a brake on revenues.
You may disagree, so let's just say that Red Hat is unlikely to become anywhere near as big as Microsoft.

Red Hat concentrates more or less exclusively on enterprizes, helping inocculate the home market from the possibility of competition.

The bigger Red Hat gets, the more independent of IBM it can become. (Poor Novell!) And IBM is a far more dangerous and unscrupulous competitor than Red Hat.

So Microsoft is probably as glad for Red Hat's position as you are.

Perhaps, to show its role in the IT ecosystem, Red Hat could change its name to Punching Bag.
Okay, okay, forget I said it.
