MySQL 5 came out recently, and is the first version to have Views, Stored Procedures, and Triggers. Those are necessary for serious business purposes. It took MySQL five major versions to get that. It took them until version 4 to get ACID-reliable Transactions (also mandatory for business purposes), and then only with a plug-in InnoDB database engine instead of the native engines (granted, the plug-in database engines themselves are a great feature).

MySQL does have some cool features such as Enums and Sets as data types, three-byte ?medium ints? for when two bytes is insufficient but four bytes is overkill, etc.

But enterprise DBs need more than cool features. They need data mining, analyses (cubes, rollups, and multi-dimensional queries), XML data, fuzzy logic full-text searches, and much more that MySQL still doesn?t have.

It doesn?t matter if your Schwinn is more reliable than a Boeing 747. If you need to fly hundreds of people across a continent, a bicycle just won?t do.
