Linux taking over the desktop
The very nature of open source software allows it extreme flexibility. Up to now, Linux has been known mostly just as a server operating system. The strides it has been making in the desktop realm are largely due to the work of independent developers and enthusiasts who want Linux to be a desktop operating system.

The wide variety of people developing Linux is the cause of its incredible flexibility. Its greatest weakness is its greatest strength. Although many of the developers are working independently or as a hobby, the cooperation between them has taken Linux to the point where it is challenging Microsoft even in the desktop realm.
