So you trade image artifacts for distortion?
If it's open, free to use and actually better than JPEG it may offer some benefits. No doubt MS will make it the default image format for everything they do to try and force adoption.

Is higher compression really needed? The article says nothing about whether this takes more or less CPU power to compress/decompress images, nor whether multiple compression/decompression cycles will destroy the image quicker or slower than JPEG.

Right now I can use my 4 mega pixel camera with a 512MB memory card and get nearly 400 photos at "full" resolution. Sure, they're JPEGs but the quality is excellent. For a few more dollars I can get a 2GB card and fit 1500 photos on it, but do I really want to do that? As it is now, I snap for days then dump stuff to PC. A cheap 80GB disk will hold nearly 70,000 images, or if compressed a little further with minimal loss of quality 160,000 - do I really want that many? Running them as a screen saver at 10 seconds each it will take more than two weeks to get through them all.

A 4Mpx image JPEG compressed to about 512kb prints on A3 glossy almost like the real thing, do I really want the pain of changing to some other format? Just about every graphics program out there already uses its own format (usually some version of a raw image) and exports to JPEG, GIF, TIFF or whatever at the very end.
