ummm...PNG anyone?
"The JPEG artifacts make it almost unusable for professional photographers," he said. "Windows Media Photo is possibly the first viable compression format."

Yet, success will depend on adoption, Wells said. Microsoft will need to get players such as Adobe Systems and Apple Computer on board to win over the graphics professionals, he noted. A major unknown is licensing, which Microsoft has not yet addressed. "Licensing can kill this," Wells said.

Fascinating the Microsoft is shooting for the JPEG. While JPEG does have the distinct advantage of being the format available on nearly every digital camera, their pot-shot at the pros fail to account that a RAW workflow is becoming more and more common among pros adopting the digital darkroom. If they're not in RAW, they'll probably be in the PSD format. At the same time, Joe Sixpack can't tell he's looking at a compressed file (unless it's REALLY compressed, but even then he won't care).

Back to the pros now - if a compressed format is called for, I know a decent number of people, myself included, who are fans of the PNG format. It's an open standard, supports a 16-bit color depth, and an alpha channel, with animation either in development or already part of the standard. Just about every program from Paint to Photoshop can read it, and every web browser can render it. What's the benefit of reinventing the wheel here?
