My experience with StarOffice
Ok, now, this may be completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, but since OO.org was spun off from StarOffice a few years back, I wanted to share my own experiences with StarOffice from approximately 3 years ago in college.

I was using StarOffice on a Sun Solaris machine to do some simple spreadsheet work: for a pair of 32000 data points, graph the data. That is, I had 32000 rows of data, two columns per row.

Then I created a graph. The machine took about two minutes to draw the graph. The application was using 500 MB of virtual memory. The file took several minutes to save and then to open. Ridiculous.

Then I went to my Windows machine and opened Excel and did the same thing. Nearly-instantaneous graph drawing. <20 MB virtual memory used. Fast save and open.

Now, I'm sure things have changed quite a bit from those days. But that's what's in my mind whenever I read about OpenOffice and Open<ocument.
