Its better for them
From the media provider's point of view, the best system is the one that covers the territory. If more people use a player that supports Window's formats, then they will look at that one first. I doubt that it has anything to do with a monopoly frame of mind. Businesses are always looking out for their own interests.

QT and RP need to be better in some way. Microsoft is better because it is easier to obtain because the OEMs ship it with all their new machines. RP and QT could pay the OEMs to install their products, just like Microsoft does and then everyone would have everything and the OEMs would make a lot more money.
