What do you mean by "start fresh"?

Do you mean "rewrite the OS from scratch?" Then not only do lose compatibility, you also lose 20 years worth of refinement, 20 years of bug fixes.

MS is damned if the do and damned if they don't. If all they sold was one version (e.g. Ultimate Edition), then people would complain that they have to pay for features they don't want (Media Center, Tablet). Those same people complained that Windows would be cheaper if they weren't forced to buy IE and all the other bundled apps. Well, what is MS doing now? Offering you a choice: if you don't want to pay extra for Media/Tablet features, you don't have to.

It's a hard balance to strike: less SKUs means less confusion, more SKUs means consumers can choose something that better fits their needs. But how far do you go: make Windows an a-la-carte smorgasboard of features? $5 for Media Center, $10 for Tablet PC features, etc. I think Vista's approach makes sense.
